Signage

The Milton Keynes Development Corporation designed a unique system of street furniture for the new city of Milton Keynes, integrated around a theme of rectilinear simplicity. Signage was a key component of this system, and like the other components, it has been eroded by poor upkeep and management by Milton Keynes Council. MKDC-style signage has been replaced with common national designs and grid road name/number signage has been allowed to decay and has not been replaced when damaged or removed.

The unifying and identifying feature of road signage in Milton Keynes is the use of square columns standing at the very edges of the sign (as opposed to columns behind the sign as seen elsewhere). These match the square columns of the street lighting within the estates, as well as the CMK porte cocheres, the trellises in residential areas, and the predominantly rectilinear architecture. Grid roads and CMK Boulevards/Gates are distinguished from other roads by the use of larger name signs with a black outline. The proper designs are shown in the images below:
